Thoughts on APPLE Roll

 October 1, 2009

I've been thinking about our Annual Fundraiser and what makes a fundraiser successful. In terms of weather, God blessed us with a perfect day...sunny with a high in the mid 70's. Although less people than usual participated, the amount of money pledged was almost the same amount as last year. I was privileged to help with registration this year and I want to share some of what I heard as I handed out free Dilly Bar coupons and Door Prize tickets.

I was touched by the gentleman who turned in a donation of $510 and told me that he takes $20 from each paycheck all year and donates the money for the APPLE Roll. There was a youth group from Durand who came together to walk and donate the proceeds to a "good cause". Three college students stopped to see what was happening and I had the opportunity to share about the ministry of APPLE. We hope that contacts like that will bring clients who need help at UWEC to APPLE. I can't help but think that God was smiling on us that Saturday and maybe was thinking "Well done, good and faithful servants!" That's enough to make the day a success in my eyes.

APPLE Roll Update

Sept 24, 2009

Thanks to all who attended the APPLE Roll this past Saturday in Owen Park. The weather was perfect and we had a great time, with client testimonies and honoring 2 of our long time staff members, Debbie Hubbell (15 years) and Anita Kavanaugh (10 years). Preliminary numbers are 122 participants and over $17,000 pledged. You have until Oct. 19th to get the money in to be eligible for the three top prizes.

And we want you all to know that Alyce Myers was released from the hospital Saturday morning and came directly to the park for her lunch! Now THAT is dedication! She has $5600 pledged to the Center, and Pastor Pond and his wife, and other friends came to walk in her place! You are a blessing! A huge thanks to Calvary Baptist Church for their support of APPLE through Alyce.

APPLE Roll 2009

Thursday, Sept. 17th - The planning is done and the preparations are nearly finished. We're so looking forward to seeing our supporters and friends this coming Saturday morning in Owen Park! The weather forecast is wonderful. It's always great to get together and see those of you who care about what we do - you'll hear from a client, and I will be reading from a recent email I received from a former client who wants to help. We can't wait to see you Saturday!

Recently a Post-abortion client finished the eight week Bible study we provide, called “Forgiven and Set Free.” The abortion we were discussing during this time was long in the past – many years – but is still affecting her in many ways. This wonderful study really helps women to work through the emotions, pain, guilt, shame, forgiveness and anger that come with that decision for many people.

It helps to be able to talk about it in a safe place.

It helps to have “permission” to grieve.

It helps to know you’re not alone.

And – she told me she learned that “God is not mad at me.”

What a wonderful thing to be part of… learning to find and accept forgiveness, extend it to others, and to forgive yourself.

Director's Blog

 Thursday, July 9th, 2009

Welcome to the new blog on www.friendsofapple.org. We know it’s important to tell our partners the stories, keep you informed and for us to be more in touch. The plan is to update this blog often. I’ve asked others to join in writing also. You’ll hear from staff, board members, volunteers and even clients.

Today I want to tell you that we recently got an email from a former client. She wrote: “I was counseled by someone there a few years back after an incredibly hard time in my life. Because of people in your organization I was brought closer to God and was saved in so many different ways… Thank you for all you do.” We corresponded and she drove from where she lives now to come and meet with us again. You'll be hearing more from her in the future.

So often we don’t know how the stories end. What an encouragement to us – and to you – to know that APPLE is making a difference in people’s lives. We are grateful to hear what the Center meant to this young girl years ago. We love it when someone takes the time and makes the effort to tell us.
